Dark Age of Camelot Wiki
When trying to run Dark Age of Camelot under Windows 98, I receive the following error "Socket error". What can I do?

By default, Windows 95 installs WinSock 1.1. When you upgrade from Windows 95 to Windows 98, WinSock 1.1 is upgraded to WinSock 2.

However, there are some third-party DLL-replacing applications that prevent the proper installation of WinSock 2 when upgrading from Windows 95 to Windows 98. To determine if WinSock 2 support has been successfully installed on Windows 98, execute the following program from the Start button Run command:

In the left pane of the Microsoft System Information screen, expand the Software Environment selection. Under Drivers choose 32-Bit Modules Loaded. If the WinSock 2 component, WS2_32.DLL, is listed on the right-hand side, then you are running WinSock 2.

A simpler method would be to simply perform a search on your local drive for the Windows Socket 2.0 32-bit DLL (WS2_32.DLL). Note that the WinSock 1.1 component (WSOCK32.DLL) still exists in your WindowsSystem folder.
