Recommended race choices depend on the specialization chosen:
- For Fist wrap mauler, High strength races are preferred (Half Ogre, Firbolg, Minotaur, Troll)
- For caster mauler, high dex races are preferred (Inconnu, Lurikeen, kobold)
- If uncertain about the specialization you want to play, choose a balanced race (briton, celt, norseman)
Abilities & Specialization[]
CASTER MAULER
Caster maulers require a minimum Mauler Staff specialization level to use some of the spells in the Aura Manipulation specialization line. Typically, a caster mauler spec will look like this
- 47+ Aura Manipulation
- 35+ Mauler Staff
- 38+ Magnetism
After that, the remaining points are left to the preference of the player. To maximize caster damage, go to 50 AM. To get a better pulsing snare, go 40 Magnetism. There aren't really any advantages to go higher than 35 Mauler Staff because the 39 style isn't useful and the weaponskill increase can be much better with 41 Magnetism.
FIST WRAP MAULER
FW maulers will spec differently depending on the playstyle.
Group spec
- 50 Fist Wraps
- 45+ Magnetism
- 22+ Aura Manipulation
Your main damage source will be the two part back chain of Haymaker/Phoenix Strike. The 45+ Magnetism spec will give you all the utility needed on a FW mauler while the points spent in AM will improve survivability through the ABS buff and Evade buff.
Solo spec
The solo spec has changed since the Phoenix strike two part chain went from an anytime chain to a back positional. There are a lot of tools available to a FW mauler for the solo game and therefore there are multiple spec options. However, typically in solo you will have
- 34 Fist Wraps
- 35+ Magnetism
After that, the points can be spent in Power Strikes to get more offensive/debuff abilities or in Aura Manipulation and Magnetism to get a lot of survivability. It becomes player preference at that point.

Tactics[]
Maulers will choose to be a melee oriented class or a magic oriented class, depending on their specialization. The two melee lines are Fist wrap, which is a strong melee spec line using damage proc styles to maximize damage and Mauler staff, which is used in conjunction with the Aura Manipulation specialization line.
Typically, a "caster mauler" will specialize in Aura Manipulation and Mauler staff (AM spells often require a minimum specilization level in Mauler staff) and spend their remaining points in the other magic lines Power strikes and Magnestism. A "FW mauler" will specialize in First Wrap and then split the remaining points in Magnetism, Power strikes and Aura Manipulation to get the different spells and buffs that each line provide.
PVE[]
Caster maulers are sub-optimal in PvE, the main reason being that their main power generating tool, Gift of Perizor in Farseer aura, doesn't return a lot of power in PvE. The general tactic will be to root your target (Gift of Perizor in Willbull aura), switch aura to Farseer and power tap. Once you've acquired enough power, use Gift of Albion/Hibernia/Midguard to kill your target.
RVR[]
CASTER MAULER
For caster maulers, their main focus is to do damage, and they are very good at it.
The first goal of a caster mauler will be to manage your power. You have three main abilities to do so (aside from receiving damage); Gift of Perizor in Farseer Aura, Tegashrig damage to power buff and the mauler's realm rank 5 ability Gift of Perizor. You will place the tegashrig buff on a member of your group that is the most susceptible to receive damage in the fight, targetting a priority target like a healer or a character susceptible to receive a lot of damage (like a tank) are good choices. The buff duration is 30 seconds (plus duration) with a recast time of 15 seconds, so with practice you should have this buff permanently on two members of your group at all times. You will then use your Gift of Perizor "power tap" spell to steal power from your enemies. This generates a lot of power, three casts should get you to full power. Remember that if the target has no power pool, you will not get power back but the spell will still cost your power. The power tap does not break roots so rooting then powertapping an enemy caster/support is a good tactic. The Gift of Perizor spell also has a long range (1750) so it is a very efficient interrupt as well. Your realm rank 5 ability is a group dmg conversion buff that lasts a minute, use it when your whole group is receiving damage. Note that using your RR5 ability will remove SoS from your allies, so use carefully.
Your second goal will be to do damage. Caster maulers have extremely high single target damage potential. Your main objective will be to stay back, stay free and assist the caster in your group that is debuffing with the correct damage type spell. Gift of Albion/Hibernia/Midgard can do two damage types, depending on the active aura. Maulers do not have access to quickcast and Mastery of Concentration, so staying free and available will be very important.
A caster mauler has access to a range of crowd control spells in the magnetism line to help shake off oponents. Learning about the different Magnetism abilities and the different immunities they give (or don't) is critical. The use of Mauler Staff side and back stun styles, along with the two part Crescendo chain are also great tools at freeing yourself from an opponent.
FIST WRAP MAULER
The fist wrap mauler is a high dps utility melee hybrid class. Having access to stoicsm and det, it is not as vulnerable to cc as other hybrid tanks.
The dps comes from the synergy between the style procs at high levels of FW specialization, Gut shot (2 part side chain) and Phoenix Strike (2 part back chain) and the matter debuffs accessible to the class from the cone debuff in Magnetism line, Matter legendary weapons and the Cloak of the Loyal Mauler ability. The damage from the style procs is calculated from weaponskill, which is 100% strength based on a FW mauler (hence the recommendation for high strength races). You will also use the Gift of Precision weaponskill buff at 41 Magnetism specialization to add 20% to your weaponskill. Combined, this will make the mauler's damage come in very high "spikes", which can be difficult to heal.
Then, in group settings the preferred magic line is Magnetism for its pbae pulses, pbae root, cone root and pulsing single target snare. Out of all the different roots in the magnetism line, only the single target pulsing snare Endless Burden gives root immunity. The pbae pulsing snare will break mezz, so use carefully when your team has cc under control.
In summary, the FW mauler's group tactic will be to keep the appropriate pulse up, make sure his WS buff is up at all times and do dps. Keep the Tegashirg's buff on yourself when being focused and use it to help other members of your group survive dps spikes.

Realm Abilities Progression
Caster Mauler
A caster mauler's purpose is damage output. The Realm abilities will be oriented to achieve that.
- Start with the basics : Purge 2 and the required Augmented Dexterity to achieve the desired Dexterity breakpoint.
- Mastery of Focus 2 to ensure your spell lands with minimal resists
- Wild Power : Start with Wild Power 5
- Mastery of Magery : Start with Mastery of Magery 5
- Determination
The general idea is to start with putting points in Wild Power and Mastery of Magery until you have enough points to get Determination 9 and keep Wild Power 5. Once you have that, you can start rebuilding your MoM and Wild Power.
At high rank, your objective will be to have the following RAs
- Purge 2
- Aug dex X (to reach break point)
- Mastery of Focus 2
- Wild Power 9
- Determination 9
- Dual Threat 1
- Mastery of Magery X (this is the last RA you will be purchasing in the end)
Fist Wrap Mauler
The FW mauler's RA progression will initially follow the same as a regular tank
- Determination 9
- Avoidance of Magic 5+
- Augmented strength to reach 400+ strength
- Augmented Quickness to reach 250 (if required)
- Mastery of Pain
- Mastery of Magery
In terms of active RAs, it's a personal choice to go get purge 2 and/or Thornwield Field.
Templating guidelines[]
CASTER MAULER
When templating a caster mauler, the objective will be to have
- High dexterity (115+) to help you achieve a 362 break point easily. 398 dex breakpoint is achievable on high dex races (luri/kobold) and 125+ dex in template. Usually not something to look for until very high realm rank.
- Arcane syphon
- Spell duration
- +magic skills (Aura Manipulation needs to be capped at +11)
- Caster ToAs (Magic damage, spell range, casting speed and spell pierce)
- Strength (80+) : strength is your base stat influencing your staff weaponskill. Templating some strength will help land some Staff styles.
Weapon: Only two staves are viable; the aurulite staff and Traldors oracle. Aurulite staff has very good stats while Traldor has a fast swing speed and Arcane syphon.
Armor: The Curse campaign chapter 9 set bonus is very good for the mauler, it increases the conversion on Tegashirg's buff by 7%. Depending on the level of dex you are looking to reach, it might be difficult to fit in a caster mauler template.
Jewelry: High syphon jewelry are important, like Cloak of the Legerdemain, Otherworldly Piercing gem, Jacina's sash and Dark Dragon Crest.
FW MAULER
When templating a FW mauler, the objective will be to have
- High strength (to maximize your weaponskill and dps)
- Mythical dps
- + melee skills
- 10% spell pierce and magic damage ToA
- Melee oriented ToA bonuses (melee damage, style damage and melee speed)
- Spell duration
Weapon: In groups, physical damage weapons will hit harder than Legendary weapons. The best main hand weapon is Cursed Fistwrap (or its Frozen alternative). In the off hand, you can use a Matter legendary weapon or the CL15 Mauler fist wrap.
Armor: The Chapter 9 set is mandatory in a group Mauler FW template.
Jewelry: The Cloak of the Loyal Mauler is mandatory. Its Matter damage debuff proc (45%) directly debuffs for your FW styles procs, drastically increasing your damage output.
Other Useful Items[]
Weapons: When playing a Caster Mauler, you can equip 1 handed weapon and a shield or two one handed weapons. Pictslayer maces that provide the short duration 20% melee resists is a good choice to improve your survivability. For a FW mauler, Staff of the Gods on your back is a great choice so that you have access to a stealth lore or an unbreakable snare charge.
Jewelry: Jewelry that provide PD/AoM (melee and magic resists) should always be part of a good template. These items include dragon rings and bracers, Ring of the Cursed King, Vigilant and Otherworldly belts.
Mythirian: Freezing king for FW mauler will usually be the go to mythirian, while Freezing Gale mythirian, for it's mythical dex and Magic ToA bonuses will help a lot in a caster mauler template.
Lore[]
A priestly caste named after one of their former leaders, Maulatous, the Maulers serve in the name of the Minotaur deity, Laresh. This fierce but benevolent deity governing the spheres of virility and physical prowess bestowed upon his followers the knowledge and ability to channel the elemental forces of the earth, such as gravity, magnetism, and auras. While grounded and in harmony with those forces, Maulers can channel them through their hands and fists, adding the power of the earth to their own. They can also manipulate the auras that surround everything in our world, auras that most people are unable to see or even detect. Maulers, greatly respected among all Minotaur, use their hands and feet in combat as effectively as any weapon of metal or wood.
