I get a "Renderer Creation Failed" error when playing DAoC in Windows XP. How can I fix this?

The first thing to check is to see if your current video card is on the supported list for the client you are attempting to use. You may view this list by typing in the keyword "video" and clicking one of the supported video card links.  Note that if you are using Shrouded Isles or Trials of Atlantis with the updated Catacombs graphics you will want to look at Catacombs for the minimum video card requirements  If you see your video card under the "not supported" section, the following solutions may not work for you.

Be sure to upgrade your video card drivers.  If you are using an nVidia GeForce card, go to [1] and get the update there.  If you are using an ATI Radeon card, go to [2] and follow the directions.  Afterwards, make sure and update DirectX to ensure that it will recognize the driver updates.  You can get the latest DirectX at [3] .

If none of the above proposed solutions work, you may also attempt the following:

Try resetting the graphical settings for the game by deleting the user.dat file for your client. You can find your user.dat file in one of the following locations:

Windows XP, Windows 98 and Windows 98 Second Edition:

C:\Documents and Settings\<windows login name>\Application Data\Electronic Arts\Dark Age of Camelot\<LotM or TOA or etc.>\

Windows Vista:

C:\Users\<windows login name>\AppData\Roaming\electronic Arts\Dark Age of Camelot\<LotM or TOA or etc.>\

Note: The "Application Data" folder for XP and earlier, and the "AppData" folder for Vista, are hidden folders.

Next, log into the game through the Server Selection and Character Selection screens, bypassing Quick Entry (have Quick Entry set to 'No Thank You' on the first login screen). At the character selection screen select the in-game resolution that you would like to play at. Do not select in-game resolution you were using while receiving the 'Renderer Creation Failed' error message.

If you wish to experiment with different in-game resolutions, feel free to do so. Simply use the above instructions to reset the default in-game resolution if you begin to receive the 'Renderer Creation Failed' message again.
